RK/PRK
RK (radial keratotomy) is a procedure that can help people with
mild to moderate myopia. During RK, tiny incisions are made into
the cornea. When these incisions heal, the center of the cornea
flattens. A flatter cornea means disstant objects are clearer.
This RK procedure can also be combined with AK (astigmatic keratotomy).
This procedure is used to reduce or eliminate mild to moderate
astigmatism. During AK, curved or straight incisions are made
in the cornea. These incisions help round out an oval cornea.
A rounder cornea means objects are no longer distorted.
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a procedure that can be
used to help people with mild to moderate mypopia with or without
astigmatism. During PRK, a special computer controlled laser (called
an excimer laser) is used to reshape the surface of the cornea.
When the center of the cornea is flattened, light rays are focused
more directly on the retina and images are clearer.
