Cosmetic Eyelid & Brow Surgery FAQ

Cosmetic eyelid and brow surgery can address concern about:

  • Loss of elasticity in skin of the upper and lower eyelids
  • Excess eyelid skin
  • Puffiness in the eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Drooping brows

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess eyelid skin. This can be done on the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can restore the eyes to a more youthful appearance.

Ptosis repair surgery strengthens the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid. By strengthening this muscle, your upper eyelid is able to open more, resulting in improved symmetry of your eyes and more well rested appearance.

Health insurance does not typically cover cosmetic procedures. However, if the surgery corrects a current health issue, it may be covered under certain circumstances. Our team will assist you in finding what your health insurance will and will not cover.

After examination of your eyelid issue in our clinic, Dr. Eric Fry will discuss with you his findings and recommendations, as well as the risks and benefits of the procedure(s) he recommends.

Cosmetic eyelid and brow surgery is done at our outpatient surgery center. This allows you to have the procedure and go home the same day. You’ll be given sedation medication through an IV to help you relax. Dr. Eric Fry will then precisely mark and carefully anesthetize the areas in which you’ll be having surgery. While under conscious sedation, your vital signs and comfort will be carefully monitored by our anesthesia staff and surgeon.

After surgery, you’ll spend time in our recovery area, where our nurses will ensure you’re doing well before letting you go home.

You’ll be given information about what to expect and detailed care instructions for after surgery by our team. Any questions you have will be answered prior to surgery.

Some common side effects after surgery include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Blurry vision (from ointment applied to your eyes)
  • Pain
  • Feeling more tired than usual

It is important that you follow the after-surgery care instructions given to you to minimize these side effects and to prevent infection. It can take up to two weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve and a several more weeks to fully heal. You’ll be scheduled for a follow up visit with your surgeon one week after surgery, where any sutures you have will be removed. Additional visits thereafter will be based on your needs.
