Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA approved injectable to treat fine lines or wrinkles between your eyebrows or around the corners of your eyes. It’s also indicated to treat fine lines and wrinkles in your forehead.

Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, with an estimated 7.23 million procedures done each year, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

In addition to its cosmetic uses, the FDA has also approved Botox to treat chronic migraines. Having chronic migraines means that you suffer from migraine headaches for 15 or more days per month. Some insurance companies even cover this medical use of Botox, though you might need to get authorization from your insurance provider beforehand.

What does Botox do?

Botox temporarily blocks the chemical communication between your nerves and muscles. When your nerves are unable to send signals to your muscles, they contract less, which means that the skin covering them spends less time folded over itself.

The reduction in folding leads to a reduction in wrinkles. And, because the muscles in these wrinkle-prone areas are contracting less, Botox prevents the formation of new wrinkles.

When it comes to treating chronic migraines, Botox prevents your nerve endings from producing the pain transmissions that cause headaches. It might take some time for Botox to start working on your migraines, but once it takes effect, it prevents you from feeling your migraines before they even begin.

What are the steps for Botox?

Botox treatments involve little more than having one of the physicians at Fry Eye Associates inject the serum into your target area. The procedure doesn’t require any incisions or anesthesia, and the injections aren’t anything more than a slight pinch.

For cosmetic Botox to treat wrinkles, all you need are three to five injections in your target area, while medical Botox for migraine treatments requires 31 injections in seven key areas of your head and neck.

The whole process only takes 15-20 minutes and is done entirely in-office. You might experience some slight bruising, but generally speaking, Botox injections don’t require any recovery or downtime.

For cosmetic Botox, you should see results within five to 10 days of your treatment, and those results should last for three to six months, after which you’ll need to get retreatment to maintain your progress.

If you’re getting Botox to treat migraine headaches, you should notice results within two treatment cycles. Schedule your Botox appointment today by calling the office at Fry Eye Associates or booking a visit online.
