LASIK Q & A

What is LASIK?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a vision correction procedure that can treat common refractive errors like:

  • Astigmatism
  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)

The goal of LASIK surgery is to reshape your cornea to enhance how light focuses on your retina. For many, LASIK surgery can eliminate the need for wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses and help you see clearly both at a distance and up-close.

The team at Fry Eye Associates uses a bladeless LASIK technique that reduces your risk for post-surgical complications. LASIK is virtually painless, and your provider ensures your health, safety, and comfort throughout your procedure.

What happens during a LASIK procedure?

During your LASIK procedure, your Fry Eye Associates provider uses the Intralase® laser system to create a corneal flap. Your surgeon pulls the flap back to reshape your cornea with laser technology.

Corneal changes depend on the vision issues you have, such as:

  • Nearsightedness requires the cornea to be flatter
  • Farsightedness requires the central cornea to be steeper
  • Astigmatism requires the cornea to be rounder or more spherical

Following the laser correction, your surgeon replaces the flap, and it will begin healing immediately.

What can I expect following LASIK surgery?

In many cases, both eyes can be treated with LASIK technology in 15 minutes. You may initially experience some blurriness in your vision, which continues to resolve in the hours after your procedure.

Your Fry Eye Associates surgeon will send you home to rest with instructions on how to properly care for your eyes.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

To determine if LASIK surgery is an option for you, the Fry Eye Associates team performs a comprehensive eye evaluation. To qualify for LASIK, you must be over the age of 21, in good overall health and not have any active eye infections or other eye complications.

If you have a powerful prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, your provider may not recommend LASIK, as you may not experience optimal results.

To find out if you’re the right candidate for LASIK, schedule an eye evaluation at Fry Eye Associates today using the online booking feature or by calling the office.
